I had a good chat with some of the children coming in for their various appointments in Outpatients today. A chance for me to learn about what hand washing means to them when they are in the hospital and an opportunity for them to discover a little about how hand washing helps to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. I asked if they knew anything about micro-organisms? What are they and what might they look like?
We also used our hands to do some drawing! On two giant right and a left hands, the children invented all kinds of little creatures! We thought about what might be living on our hands without us realising it. We got messy with inks and sponges, and when it was time to go, our own hands were looking pretty colourful too! Definitely in need of a hand wash.
Our microorganisms were all different sizes. Some had lots of legs. Some had spots.

Some looked like butterflies and some looked like worms.
